Browser Problems

I've been using Firefox for a while and really like it.  While I haven't upgraded to FF3 because of many bugs mentioned on Twitter and Plurk, I'm sure I'll upgrade in the next month or so.  I love the add-ons, I like using Google Browser sync since I use several different computers depending on where I am, and I like the feel of it.  One of the add-ons that I've been using for some time now, involves del.icio.us.  I like delicious and use it both for myself and to keep the links for our students organized on our school website.

However, I know I'm not good at keeping my sites as organized as a I should.  I'm doing okay with keeping sites organized for our school site, but not at home.  For me, it all comes down to taggin and I'm horrible at it.  This leads me to a current problem with Firefox. With the way I have things set up now, I can bookmark sites to my computer and del.icio.us 2 ways.  One way involves two steps - the first is to simply add a bookmark like normal and then to add it to del.icio.us by clicking on the Tag button in the toolbar.  Here, I can add tags for the site and any other information I need.  The other way I can do it is all in one step, but I can't add any tags to the site.  When I bookmark a site, I get a message that asks if I want to add the site to del.icio.us and when I click Yes, it just adds it - doesn't ask for tags or anything.  The result is a bunch of sites in del.icio.us that are untagged.  I'm not digging this.

I guess my last sentence could lead me to diigo.  I've heard a lot of good things about this social bookmarking site, but haven't taken one minute of my time to check it out.  Perhaps I should.  For now, I think I'm going to have to go the 2 step route to bookmarking my sites using FireFox because the tagless sites really doesn't do me that much good.

Since my tagging abilities need serious help, I'm looking for suggestions and tips to be more consistent.  Drop me a comment with how you tag sites and what some common tags are that you use.

There's an option to tag your bookmarks to del.icio.us before they get posted, but I'm not seeing it right now. On mine, I just right-click on the page, then select "Bookmark this page in Delicious...", and then I get a box that prompts me to add tags and notes. One thing that might help is updating to FF3, and then adding the updated del.icio.us extension. I just haven't seen any bugs in FF3 that would prevent me from switching right away.

PS--what's your user name in del.icio.us? Or do I have you in my network already? I'm over there as rickscheibner.

Are you using this version of the del.icio.us addon for FireFox? In which case I just click on the tag button when tagging and add my tags. I don't stress too much about how well I've tagged since I use their Search Bookmarks tools to quickly locate the website rather than my bad tags.

It sounds like you don't have the delicious plug in installed (see Sue's note). You'll end up with a little icon for your toolbar once it's installed. When you click it, a window pops up on the screen where you can add your tags and notes. The more info you give delicious, the better it is. When you go to your delicious account, look at the right side of the screen. You can type a search term in the box and ask to search "your bookmarks". The more information you give as far as title, notes, and tags, the better it will be at searching for you. I don't bother with bundling any more because the search works so well.

If you do start a Diigo account, import all your delicious tags to Diigo first. Then install the Diigo toolbar and make sure you fix the settings so it adds your bookmarks to both sites at the same time.

Another thing about Diigo...I tried it for a while, and found it to be a little too much social bookmarking for me. I just want to be able to save something and share it with somebody else who may be interested, and del.icio.us does that better than anybody else. Any thing more than that is overkill.

Are you unhappy with your browser for your social bookmarking? That is why I switched to Flock and I LOVE IT! I have used various browsers this summer in my quest for sanity in gathering and sharing resources. Flock has a Diigo toolbar and it can be set to share with delicious at the same time. I love Flock because you can share with a group like Diigo, share to Twitter when you need to share fast or share to just a few with the mail to feature! They have some nice video tutorials on YouTube for you to check out... become a flockstar!! from infolibrarian!
